New record for applications to Umeå University

NEWS The number of applications to courses and programmes at Umeå University reached a new record this year. Nearly 57,000 applications have been submitted for the autumn 2012 term, over 3,300 more than the previous year. The increase is higher than the average for Swedish universities.

"These figures are very satisfying, especially since we have increased more than the national average," says Anders Fällström, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education at Umeå University. "My interpretation is that Umeå University is a highly attractive academic university and that its courses and programmes are strongly approved. Simultaneously, we need to remember that the figures are only an indication of how many will actually register for classes in the autumn."

The total number of applications to Umeå University jumped over six per cent, in comparison with the national average of 3.4 per cent. Umeå University places fifth in Sweden for first choice applicants and the total number of applicants. These figures predominately include courses and programmes with Swedish language instruction, including the highly popular medical, social work and nursing.

Although the increasing number of applications demonstrates the university's attractiveness, the vision is not to create additional places.

"We are already one of the largest universities," says Anders Fällström. "What is most important for us right now is to improve the quality of our academics, and to have a more even dispersion over a variety of courses and programme. Obviously, high application figures ease this work."

Over 24,300 persons have applied to Umeå courses and programmes at Umeå University as first choice applicants, which is also an increase of six per cent.
