New semester begins with nearly 23,000 admitted students

NEWS Umeå University is placed third among universities in Sweden for the number of admitted students – 22,600 have accepted their offer to programmes and courses. When the autumn 2015 semester starts on 31 August, more are expected to begin studies in teacher education, social work and energy engineering.

The total number of admitted students in Sweden has decreased in comparison with the prior year, but in Umeå the development is progressing higher. 4,817 students in degree programmes students and 17,516 in single-subject courses are beginning their studies at Umeå University this autumn. A total of 22,600 students have been admitted, which is an increase of 1.5 per cent compared with autumn 2014.

For teacher education programmes and courses, the situation looks brighter than it has for quite a long time. The total number of admitted students has jumped across the entire country, and also in Umeå. In comparison with last year, 120 additional students have been admitted to teacher education programmes at Umeå University. This represents a 16 per cent increase, which is greater than the average national increase of 9 per cent.

”It is very pleasing that the trend has continued with the increasing number students that are admitted to our teacher education programmes and courses,” Says Anders Fällström, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University. ”Extra significant is that subject course teacher education has risen. The teacher education programmes are perhaps the most important for the region and nation.”

Several other major degree programmes have also seen increases, including the bachelor’s in social work programme and energy engineering programme. In addition, the computer science and study and vocational counsellor programmes have shown positive development.

On Monday 31 August, the 2015 autumn semester starts for the majority of students at Umeå University. A welcome fair for new students will be held on Thursday 3 September in Universum and Lindell Hall, with approximately 140 exhibitors.

”It is important that all students feel truly welcome, to the university and to Umeå,” says Anders Fällström. “This year, I also hope that many will be a part of the university’s 50th anniversary week celebration that begins on 12 September.”
