Professor Sujata Patel visits the Department of Sociology at Umeå University

Sujata Patel, Professor of Sociology at the University of Hyderabad, India, will spend a week as guest professor at the Department of Sociology in Umeå, November 17-22. Sujata Patel’s visit forms part of the Sociology Department’s internationalization initiative.
Sujata Patel is an internationally renowned social scientist with a broad range of research interests, spanning social theory, urban studies, political social movements, gender studies and postcolonial theory.She is engaged in questions relating to teaching and learning practices, and has written on the challenges which current university structures pose for teaching and learning in the classroom.Professor Patel is the author of ten books and more than sixty articles, and is currently the Series Editor of three book series published by SAGE, Routledge and Oxford University Press. She has also served as Vice-President of the International Sociological Association.During her stay in Umeå, Sujata Patel will participate as guest lecturer in the transdisciplinary PhD course ”Social Science in Context”, organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences. Professor Patel will also give an open lecture entitled "Doing Global Social Science: Issues, Problems and Challenges". She will meet colleagues and groups at the departmental, faculty and university levels, including the chairperson of the Nordic Centre in India, to discuss opportunities for future educational and research collaborations.Sujata Patel’s visit is supported by the Department of Sociology, the UCGS Postcolonial Feminist Seminar, and Umeå University’s new India project.
