The Swedish Research Council, Lantmäteriet (the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority), the Association of Swedish Higher Education and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) have agreed on a solution to finance and distribute geographic information for research, education and culture.

The Research Council pays for user licenses, the distribution of certain geographic information available for download, and some display services offered by Lantmäteriet. The aim is to facilitate studies and research that need geographic information such as digital maps, new high-resolution elevation data and aerial images in color.

- Almost 400,000 students and researchers can now use geographic information of high quality, says Gunnar Lysell, business developer at Lantmäteriet.

Distribution system partially developed in Umeå

During spring 2012, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå and Uppsala developed a solution for accessing Lantmäteriet’s geodata, which is now expanded to serve all universities. Thanks to the help of ITS at Umeå University, anyone with a SWAMID-identity (for example CAS) can login to the service.

- Our goal was to be able provide the service in time for the start of the term. We are pleased that we have to met the expectations so far, say Mats Högström (SLU Umeå) and Jakob Lagerstedt (Uppsala), GIS Coordinator at SLU and developer of distribution service
