Royal presence at Annual Celebration Ceremony on 15–17 October

NEWS Umeå University’s 50th celebrations continue with the Annual Celebration Ceremony on 15—17 October 2015. On Friday, a Jubilee Symposium will be held with Emmanuelle Charpentier among others, and on Saturday a wide spectrum of popular science lectures is offered. On Saturday the Annual Celebration Ceremony is held in the presence of the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustav.

Thursday 15 October at 13:00 marks the start of the Annual Celebrations when chief librarian Mikael Sjögren inaugurates an exhibition on 2015 year’s honorary doctors, professors, award-winners and medallists. Shortly afterwards, the award-winner of the Iksu Sport Science Award, Josef Fahlén, holds a lecture on sports in constant change.

Jubilee Symposium – Excellence by Choice

On Friday 16 October at 13:30–16:30, Umeå University and MIMS, The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden, invites the general public to a Jubilee Symposium under the name Excellence by Choice. Among the participants is award-winner Emmanuelle Charpentier, visiting professor at Umeå University and group leader at MIMS, who through her participation in the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 mechanism stands behind a scientific breakthrough in biomedical research with great versatility within biology and medicine.

What enables groundbreaking research? What might attract the next generation of researchers? These questions are of fundamental importance to the future of research and will be highlighted, debated and discussed at the symposium Excellence by Choice. The invited speakers are leading international researchers and leaders in research organisations focusing on the recruitment and support for young researchers in the field of Life Sciences. The symposium is held in English and is open to everyone.

38 popular science lectures

All 2015 year’s popular science lectures for the Annual Celebration Ceremony will be held on Saturday 17 October starting at 9:00. There are 38 lectures available, in either Swedish or English, where you get a chance to learn more about, for instance, public health in relation to big data, Australian convicts and immigrants, and hybridization in evolution. You also get a chance to listen to lectures on industry compensation with regards to emission and find out how plants know when to flower. The lectures are held by the honorary doctors, professors and award-winners. This year’s new feature allows you to save your own choice of programme on your personal page.

Annual Celebration Ceremony with royal presence

Umeå University’s Annual Celebration Ceremony takes place at 17:00 on Saturday 17 October in Aula Nordica. This marks the conferment of eight honorary doctors, the instalment of 17 professors, the awarding of 16 scientific awards, and honouring of two medals. King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, is participating in the ceremony and will hand over the Umeå University EC Jubilee Award 2015 – The MIMS Excellence by Choice Programme – to Emmanuelle Charpentier.

Everyone interested is welcome to view the Annual Celebration Ceremony that lasts for two hours. Advance registration to the ceremony is necessary for seating in the auditorium and can be submitted to: promotion@umu.se
