Science: CRISPR-Cas9 elected Breakthrough of the Year 2015

NEWS Every year in December, the staff of the scientific journal Science singles out a significant development or achievement as the Breakthrough of the Year. This year’s winner is the genome-editing technique CRISPR, and its new applications – to a large extent developeda mechanism deciphered by Emmanuelle Charpentier and her research team at MIMS (Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden) at Umeå University.

CRISPR was on everyone’s lips already in 2012 and 2013, but the technique is now considered so mature and well-developed that Science and its advisors now position it in the forefront; before discoveries about the planet Pluto, new findings about the nervous system and the development of Ebola vaccines.
