SEK 20 million to joint research project between Umeå University and FOI
NEWS
The European CBRNE Centre at Umeå University has received its till now largest EU-financed research project of close to SEK 20 million. Together with the Overall Defence Research Institute (FOI), the CBRNE Centre will develop and create support functions for the European Union's Health Security Committee (HSC), when it comes to incidents with chemicals and radioactive substances.
They will conduct a mapping of European laboratories that handle chemicals and radioactive substances as well as evaluate technical and scientific competence for these laboratories. The mapping will eventually result in the creation of a network of expertise in the field. Further, a set of rules and regulations will be established, and in combination with the network, this will in the long term provide knowledge and procedures for effective and correct proceeding in case of incidents involving chemicals and radioactive substances in Europe. The intention is that there should never be doubts or obstacles when it comes to priorities and plan of action if or when an incident occurs, irrespective of where within the EU.
The project is scheduled to proceed for three years, and will begin during spring 2010. Dzenan Gino Sahovic, manager European CBRNE Centre, and Ola Claesson, FOI, will be project managers. -This project is incredibly important to both the CBRNE Centre at Umeå University and to FOI. The network is expected to become a platform for future larger joint EU-projects in this field, says Dzenan Gino Sahovic.
