Several subjects listed high in world university ranking

Five subject areas at Umeå University were listed among the world’s best higher education institutions in this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject. This is a significant increase of the number of subject areas from the prior year.
The number of subject areas at Umeå University that were ranked among the world’s top 200 in the 2013 edition of QS World University Rankings by Subject increased over twofold in comparison with 2012. The university maintained its position in the areas of biological sciences and sociology, while environmental sciences returned to the top 200. Moreover, two new subject areas at Umeå University made the list for the first time: education and training, and geography.
This is the third year that the QS World University Rankings by Subject has been conducted. A total of 30 popular subject areas at 2,858 of the world's universities were evaluated. In addition to number of citations and h-index, the rankings are based on responses from thousands of people who evaluated education and research on selected topics at universities around the world.
Institutions at the very top in most subject areas included elite American and British universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.
