NEWS DIGSUM is collaborating with the University of Westminster in London in organising a symposium entitled Times are a Changin’– Temporality, Memory and Social Movements in the Digital Age. The event will take place in London on 2nd and 3rd June 2016. The initiators of the event are Sam Merrill, DIGSUM and Department of Sociology at Umeå University, and Anastasia Kavada, University of Westminster.
The symposium will bring together more than twenty-five researchers from institutions based in six European countries (Sweden, UK, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and The Netherlands) who are individually working on case studies from across the world using an array of disciplinary perspectives.
The event departs from the acknowledgment that digital and social media, by altering patterns of recording, remembering, coordinating and imagining, bring fascinating changes in the relations between time, memory and social movements.
The symposium was conceived within and financed by the STINT funded collaborative project entitled Advancing Social Media Studies, involving Umeå University’s DIGSUM and CAMRI. It is also supported by the University of London’s Centre for the Study of Cultural Memory where Sam is currently also a visiting fellow.
Speaking of the event Sam said:
– Anastasia and I are really proud to have been able to bring together such an excellent combination of scholars to tease out the connections between social movements, memory, media and time. There has been growing interest in this underexplored area so the symposium has the potential to set the agenda for and kick start a whole range of fresh and interesting research projects.
It is planned that the symposium will lead to a number of publication outcomes including a special issue journal and an edited volume.
