The Swedish Brain Foundation invests in brainpower in Umeå

NEWS Seven research projects at Umeå University will receive a total of SEK 9 million in funding from the Swedish Brain Foundation, as part of its allocation of SEK 190 million to 122 research projects across Sweden.

Both the amount awarded to Umeå University and the university’s share of the national funding, 4.7 percent, are higher than in previous years.

“The Swedish Brain Foundation’s investment of SEK 9 million in research at Umeå University is a clear recognition of the high quality of our brain research. The increase in our share of national funding also shows that our researchers are highly competitive. These grants provide greater opportunities to develop knowledge that can contribute to future diagnostics and treatments for brain disorders,” says Katrine Riklund, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.

The funded projects cover several important areas of brain research. Among other topics, researchers are investigating the mechanisms behind neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and Alzheimer’s disease, the brain’s own maintenance processes, and how tick-borne viruses enter the brain.

This year’s funding allocation from the Swedish Brain Foundation is the largest to date. A total of SEK 190 million is being awarded, nearly SEK 40 million more than last year. The funding is made possible through donations from the public.
