Tuition fees set for non-EU/EEA students

NEWS Umeå University has formally decided on the upcoming tuition fees for students from countries outside the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA). The tuition fees vary depending on the academic subject area.

The Swedish government has approved legislation that introduces application and tuition fees for students outside the EU/EEA for the autumn 2011 term. Universities and higher education institutions have been given the power to make their own decisions as to the size of the fee, based on the principle of full cost coverage.

"This includes costs for the reception of fee paying students, housing and accommodation services, payment procedures, expanded student support and international marketing," explains Anders Fällström, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education at Umeå University.

Umeå University's tuition fee rates are based on the government compensation for full-time equivalent students and annual performance equivalent, plus an additional SEK 35,000. Rates will be valid from 1 July 2011 until 30 June 2012.

"We have decided that our pricing is not to be at the top or the bottom compared to other universities,” continues Fällström. “We have also decided that the fee for students will be the same for all academic terms for education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. We believe that it is an important principle that the cost of the education is very clear to students when they apply, and that students will not be affected by unexpected fee increases during their time studying.

The most expensive education for students outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland, that begin studies in the autumn term 2011, will be in fine artrs, which will cost SEK 335,000 for per year (two academic terms). The most affordable will be courses and programmes that are in the subject areas of arts (humanities), social sciences and law, which will cost SEK 90,000. Tuition fees also apply to single-subject courses, which are calculated based on the annual fee rate for the particular subject and the number of credits (ECTS) for the specific course.

Fees for courses and programmes (annual rate, full-time studies):
