UID student Dawid Dawod winner of Skanska Sustainable Cities Challenge

Dawid Dawod, studying at the Umeå Institute of Design (UID) at Umeå University, has won the student competition Skanska Sustainable Cities Challenge with his entry titled "Urban Fresh." He was awarded with trip with Skanska to New York City and presented his case before leading politicians and decision makers.
Stockholm city is expected to reach over 3 million inhabitants in the year 2050. We need to prepare for a more sustainable society.
"I have imagined a future pedestrian Stockholm with a well developed and efficient public transport systemm, says Dawid Dawot. "A Stockholm where food supply is done by vertical organic farming in the form of skyscrapers within the city. I asked myself how this new society without cars could create meeting places through buying fresh, organic and locally produced food in a sustainable and stress-free way in 2050?"
Urban Fresh is an idea based on people's daily routines. Every morning, on your way to work, as you pass through the underground, you leave your "box" there. Using the underground system as a delivery channel, you just need to choose a time and a location where you want to pick up your box on the way back from work, on your way to a friend or to a meeting. The only thing you have to do during the day is to log on the network and fill in what you wish to order. When you pick your box up it will be filled with yummy ingredients for your daily meal.
"The box itself is like a small refrigerator in A3 format and can be carried elegantly over your shoulder, says Dawid Dawot. "Any leftovers you leave in the box will next day be converted into biogas/ renewable energy."
Urban Fresh means that subway stations in 2050 will be the new meeting place where people share their passion for food exchanging recipes, tips and ideas for cooking.
The jury's motivation: "The winning entry is an innovative solution where a system of locally grown food creates interaction between people in collective meeting places. These new venues to meet people from different cultures in everyday life also creates local jobs in our future urban environments. The entry is well thought out and encourages change. The presentation was done in ainspired and convincing way."
