Umeå Academy of Fine Arts / Between the Devil and the Deep Sea

NEWS On Saturday 16 May at 14:00 this year’s exhibition by the graduate students from the masters programme at Umeå Academy of Fine Arts opens at Bildmuseet. Welcome to the press preview on Wednesday 13 May at 10:00.

The exhibition presents works by Benjamin Andersson, Samuel Andersson, Loes Degener, Joakim Friberg, Anna Hillbom, Funny Livdotter, Oscar Mega Männikkö, Douwe Mulder, Erik Nilsson, Ann-Catrin Olsson, Varg Strande, André Talborn, Jonas Westlund and Katrin Westman. Professor Swetlana Heger has been their main supervisor. The exhibition title Between the Devil and the Deep Sea refers to the time between the end of the student’s art education and the initiation of their professional careers.

Participating artists and list of artworks

Between the Devil and the Deep Sea represents the culmination of five years of study in Fine Arts and displays a wide range of practices and ideas including performance art, sculpture, photography, drawing, painting, audio and video. The students have developed independent practices, specific to their individual intentions and temperaments.

Ann-Catrin Olsson performs Donated Moves every day at 12:30 (duration about 5 minutes) throughout the exhibition period. Jonas Westerlund will perform his piece The Volunteer Host by attending the exhibition as a volunteer invigilator. 

On the occasion of this exhibition a series of specially designed note books will be available in Bildmuseet’s shop and a catalogue will be published.

All fourteen participating artists are present at the press preview to talk about their works, along with supervising professor Swetlana Heger.

Opening Saturday May 16 at 14:00

Welcome greetings by head of department at the art academy Micael Norberg. Professor Swetlana Heger presents the exhibition. In conjunction with the opening, Ann Catrin Olsson performs her work Donated Moves. At 14:30, Douwe Mulder and Loes Degener presents Views and Visitors at Bildmuseet’s entrance floor.

Some of the participating artists offer tours of the exhibition followed by a concert in the exhibition space with folk rock artist Joe Wulff (UK/Germany)

Artist Anna Hillbom in a conversation with the poet Pernilla Berglund about place, body and material. Writing forms an important part of Anna Hillbom’s artistic expression, Pernilla Berglund recently published her second poetry collection, Trap.

Saturday 30 and Sunday, May 31 12:00 to 16:00

Open workshop on mural animation with Erik Nilsson. We paint the walls in the workshop area with patterns in red, yellow and blue (RGB colours) and with differently coloured lighting creates the illusion of animation.

Sunday, May 31 at. 14:00 (exhibition's last day)

Participating artists Loes Degener and Douwe Mulder gives a presentation - Views from Bildmuseet - in collaboration with Joshua Taylor and Rafaela Taylor.

Thursday, June 4, the master student’s satellite exhibition opens at Galleri Andersson / Sandström in Stockholm.
