Umeå School of Architecture student receives ‘Global Swede’ award

Ali Reza Dossal, master’s degree student at the Umeå School of Architecture of Umeå University, received the 2014 Global Swede diploma at a ceremony in Stockholm on 12 May. The special recognition is a joint initiative between the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Institute.
Higher education institutions from across the country have been invited to participate and nominate one foreign student to the fourth annual Global Swede diploma ceremony. The objective is to highlight international students who have studied in Sweden and have distinguished themselves in areas closely related to innovation and entrepreneurship.
”Ali Reza Dossal is very good ambassador for Umeå University, says Per A Nilsson, International Stategist at Umeå University. “He has outstanding academic achievement and is a creative and innovative person who has demonstrated a clear perspective of sustainability in his work.”
Ali Reza Dossal previously worked as a volunteer in designing temporary housing for Pakistani flood victims before he began his studies in Sweden in August 2012. The experience inspired him to explore the possibility of more sustainable environments and experiment with wood and eco-friendly materials in the architectural context. He has consistently achieved strong academic results and has a strong interest in innovation and entrepreneurship. In addition, he works part-time as a teaching assistant at Humlab digital humanities laboratory at Umeå University.
"The award came as a surprise to me, said Ali Reza Dossal. "But of course it's a great honour to represent Umeå University and my country Pakistan. I believe this is needed to encourage more and more people in academics to inspire them into bridging the gaps between continents and education."
This year, a total of 21 foreign students at higher education institutions in Sweden have received the Global Swede recognition which includes a diploma and gift. The awards were distributed by Ewa Björling, Sweden’s Minister of Trade, and Annika Rembe, Director-General of the Swedish Institute.
