Umeå School of Business students 2nd place in Shanghai Challenge

NEWS Akrem Abdu and Erik Johansson, students at the Umeå School of Business, Umeå University, won the second place prize in the Swedish Shanghai Challenge student competition for entrepreneurship.

“It feels great that we performed well in a national entrepreneurship competition! We were successful in finishing second and had the chance to meet many interesting business world figures,” says Erik Johansson.

The Shanghai Challenge is open to students of all backgrounds and competencies at Swedish institutes of higher education. The competitors test their creativity and entrepreneurial skills in one of several challenges from well-established companies, which this year was Kraft Foods, 3, Betsson and Hand in Hand. The challenge winners win trips to Shanghai, China.

Akrem Abdu and Erik Johansson decided to compete in the Kraft Foods challenge, in which the assignment was to increase awareness about the environmental protection organisation Rainforest Alliance among their customers.

“This was incredibly fun because this was a real case, meaning that Kraft Foods can actually apply our conclusions in their operations,” says Akrem Abdu.

600 students participated in the competition, and a total of 200 different proposals were submitted. The distribution of awards was held on 26 November with 1,800 students, entrepreneurs and well-known business world individuals in attendance. The awards ceremony was held in relation with the annual Anders Wall seminar on entrepreneurship.
