A total of 42 new international master's progamme candidates have been offered full scholarships for the 2015/16 academic year from the Swedish Council of Higher Education (UHR), Erling-Persson Scholarship Fund, Balticgruppen's Donation Trust Fund and the Swedish Institute.
After the introduction of tuition fees for higher education in Sweden in autumn 2011, the number of international students from countries outside the European Union enrolled in degree programmes decreased dramatically. Therefore, the government of Sweden has allocated special funds for scholarships for non-Europeans, which the UHR is responsible for distributing. This year, Umeå University has received approximately SEK 1.6 million to grant scholarships to new students for the 2015/16 academic year, an amount that is almost four times that of the prior academic year.
“It is gratifying that the amount from the Swedish Council of Higher Education has increased substantially for the upcoming academic year,” says Wasif Ali, International Coordinator at Umeå University. ”This means that we can grant 13 new students with 100 per cent tuition reduction.”
In addition to the UHR, there is specific funding for scholarships at Umeå University from the Erling-Persson Scholarship Fund and Baltic Gruppen’s Donation Trust Fund.
18 students admitted to master’s degree programmes in public health have received scholarships from the Erling-Persson Scholarship Fund and eight master’s programme students at Umeå School of Business and Economics have received scholarships from Baltic Gruppen’s Donation Trust Fund.
Furthermore, three students have been awarded a Swedish Institute Visby Programme Scholarship for master’s degree studies for the 2015/16 academic year. The programme is open to candidates from Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
In total, there are 42 new students have been offered full scholarships for master’s studies at Umeå University starting in the autumn 2015 term. 56 students on scholarships will be returning for their second year of studies.
