Umeå University celebrates International Week

NEWS Umeå University proudly presents International Week, a multifaceted cultural event which will see our campus turn into a smorgasbord of different cultural influences from all over the world. Umeå University's International Office are the organisers behind International Week which kicks off on Monday 17 and runs through to Thursday 20 November. The programme includes global music, foreign films, international foods and fascinating lectures and workshops.

International Week is intended for students, faculty and staff members at Umeå University, as well as all residents of Umeå. The ambition is to attract as large and diverse an audience as possible. The concept evolved from last year’s successful ‘International Evening,’ which was targeted primarily for exchange students. “The aspiration was to expand the event and reach a much broader audience at the university and community,” says Nils Seye–Larson, co-organiser of International Week and Project Manager at the International Office. "The purpose of International Week is to highlight the international diversity at the university and surrounding community."

The week begins on Monday the 17th at noon with an opening ceremony in the Teacher Education Building featuring West African music and Moroccan cuisine. “There truly is something for everyone,” says Tariq Bacchus, co-organiser of the event and Project Manager at the International Office. “The lectures are particularly intriguing and we hope it will inspire others to travel abroad and discover new cultures.”

Inger Mossberg, an Umeå University alumna, discusses her global medical experiences on Monday. Professor Dieter Müller - from the Department of Social and Economic Geography will share his experiences in Sweden on Tuesday. On Wednesday evening, international students will share their perspectives on their own countries. Diverse foreign films with English subtitles will be shown Monday through Wednesday at Dramastudion in the Arts Building. The final day features several musical performances: a harp concert at noon, Umeå-based band Kraja, and the Klezmer band Stöld. The week concludes with an international buffet and an amazing global musical journey by DJ Nico at Club Corona in the Universum Building.

The complete programme of events is available online.

International Week has been organised by the International Office in collaboration with 2014 Umeå Capital of Culture campaign, the Culture on Campus project, Folkets Bio in Umeå and Home not Home, Sweden’s contribution to the European year for cross-cultural dialogue
