Umeå University ranked as one of the world's top universities

NEWS Umeå University is among the world's 250-275 top universities according to the Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

“We are pleased with the results, especially considering that the Times Higher Education ranking is one of the most reliable rankings. Being placed among the premier 250-275 out of the thousands of universities is a very good result,” says vice-chancellor Lena Gustafsson.

The Times Higer Education World University Ranking lists the world's 400 leading universities. The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators grouped into the five areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. The indicator Umeå University got the highest score in is research influence, that is the number of citations articles by Umeå University’s researchers receive. This can be seen as the most crucial indicator because it is weighted the heaviest.

The best ranked universities are mainly from the United States or the United Kingdom, with the American university California Institute of Technology coming first, followed by Stanford (US) and Oxford (UK) on a joint second place.

In total ten Swedish universities were ranked, with Umeå University coming eighth. The top-ranked Swedish University is Karolinska Institutet on place 42.

Earlier this year when Times Higher Education listed young universities with great promise for the future, Umeå University was ranked 23rd, hence best in Sweden and Scandinavia.
