Umeå University student enrollment continues to rise

NEWS New statistics regarding the number of registered students at Umeå University has shown an increase of 475 students, or 1.82 per cent, in comparison with the same time period last year.

"We are extremely pleased that so many have chosen to attend Umeå University for their studies. The figures reveal that we hold the standing as one of Sweden's most popular universities," says Pro-Vice-Chancellor Åsa Bergenheim.

This year's increase is significantly larger than the previous year, in which 93 additional students were accounted for on 23 September 2007.
"More students will be registering for studies even after this date. Therefore, we estimate that we will have a total of over 29,000 students, including those at the post-graduate level, at the end of the calendar year," continues Åsa Bergenheim.

Although the increase of registered students is positive news for the university, there are difficult challenges to overcome.
"We have seen that more students register for distance-based courses and short courses which will result in a decrease in the total of full-year students than previously years. This in turn will mean less funding since the resource distribution system from the government is based on the total of full-year students. Nevertheless, the fact that more and more are enrolling at Umeå University is of most significance. This is a confirmation that we are an attractive institution of higher education."
