Unanimous board recommends Hans Adolfsson as new Vice-Chancellor

NEWS The University Board of Directors at Umeå University has decided to recommend Hans Adolfsson as new Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University when current Vice-Chancellor Lena Gustafsson is ending her term on 30 June 2016. The Board reached its decision on the nomination to the Government at an extra board meeting on Tuesday 26 January.

In December 2015, the Hearing Assembly at Umeå University supported the Board of Director’s suggested candidate, Hans Adolfsson, professor in organometallic chemistry and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Stockholm University, has been appointed candidate in the running of for Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University, a term of office commencing on 1 July 2016. The decision made by the Recruitment Committee and the Hearing Assembly lay the base of the Board of Director’s nomination decision.

In the next step, the Government will make the formal decision of appointing the new Vice-Chancellor in February or March.

A university Vice-Chancellor is normally appointed for a period of six years with an opportunity to twice prolong the term of office for a period of at most three years per extension.

Facts about the Vice-Chancellor appointment:

The Recruitment Committee at Umeå University is composed of members of the University Board of Directors; and consists of Chairperson Lennart Evrell, Barbara Cannon, Peter Kopelman, Mari Norgren, Barbro Biström och Nils Gustafsson. Academy Clerk Daniel Andersson acts as the committee secretary and administrative coordinator.

The Hearing Assembly consists of 89 people (45 teachers and researchers, 22 other members of staff and 22 students). The Consultative Assembly is the group with which the Recruitment Committee and the University Board of Directors confer with the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor at hand. Anders Bergh acts as chairperson of the Consultative Assembly.

Hans Adolfsson, born 1964, studied chemistry at Stockholm University from 1985–89, and completed his doctoral studies at the Royal Institute of Technology in 1995. Thereafter, he held the position of postdoc at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, USA, between 1996 and 1998. After his postdoc, he was employed as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stockholm University, and in 2007, he was installed as professor in organometallic chemistry at the same university.

Hans Adolfsson has been director of studies in organic chemistry, member of the Faculty of Science Working Committee for undergraduate studies as well as of the Chemistry Section Working Committee at Stockholm University. In 2009, he was elected to the Board of the Faculty of Science and in the following year he was elected Section Dean for the Chemistry Section at the Faculty of Science. Since 2013, he is Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Stockholm University.
