Unique chance to learn about Vietnamese and Swedish Rock Art

NEWS Västerbottens Museum and the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University are jointly arranging an enlightening seminar about rock engravings, on Monday 28 September. The seminar is titled “Rock Art – Petroglyphs in South-East Asia and Europe” and is open to the general public.

Are there differences and similarities between the rock art carvings in Asia and Europe? Archaeologists and art historians from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in Hanoi, Umeå University and Västerbottens (County) Museum are participating during the day (seminar programme) and will be providing a unique opportunity to gain a comparative outlook. Entrance is free, and the museum will be serving coffee, tea and sandwiches.

The seminar is being held in conjunction with the exhibition SAPA – hällristningar i Vietnam (rock carvings in Vietnam), which opens at Västerbottens Museum, Umeå, on Sunday 27 September. The exhibition will be on display until 8 November.

The exhibition and seminar have been initiated due to the longstanding support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency for student and teacher exchanges between the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, and has been carried in collaboration with the Västerbottens Museum. Students and teachers from the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts have visited at the Vietnamese university, and students and teachers from Hanoi have travelled to Umeå and participated in activities at the Academy. The exchange has resulted in prior exhibitions, including Vietprints at Bildmuseet, the museum of Umeå University, Does Gender Matter?, and most recently, the group exhibition titled What is Identity? which opened in Hanoi on 6 June this year. It displayed the works of all students who have been involved in the exchange programme. A total of 31 artists from Sweden and Vietnam participated in this collaboration.
