WCMM researcher receives grant from the Human Frontier Science Program

NEWS The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) has awarded a Career Development Award of 300,000 USD over three years to Lars-Anders Carlson to support the research in his new laboratory at Umeå University. Lars-Anders Carlson was recently recruited from UC Berkeley to the new Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM). He uses advanced microscopy methods to reveal how human RNA viruses replicate inside cells.

“Receiving this grant from HFSP is just delightful! HFSP is a truly international organisation with the explicit mission to fund innovative, high-risk basic research. Receiving this grant as I’m starting up my group in Umeå is very encouraging seal of approval, not only for my research but also for the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine and the infection biology community in Umeå. This substantial extra resources will allow us to be even more uncompromising in our research,” says Lars-Anders Carlson.

Lars-Anders Carlson started his position as Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics and WCMM in December 2016. He received the grant for the project Structure and mechanism of (+)ssRNA virus replication complexes. His research on RNA virus replication makes extensive use of advanced microscopy methods and will benefit from the recent installation of a new suite of cryo-electron microscopes at the Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy. HFSP awards a total of ten Career Development Awards per year, each carrying a value of 300,000 USD over 3 years.

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) was founded in 1989 based on a Japanese initiative to encourage international collaboration in basic research. Headquartered in Strasbourg, France, HFSP aims to support innovative, cutting edge life sciences research. HFSP encourages high-risk research, promotes international collaboration in the spirit of borderless science, and enables financially and intellectually independent early-career researchers.
