Project description

BLA aims to draw a transnational socio-psychological European profile of student-athletes involved in dual-career programmes and use it to promote youth positive development in sport and school contexts, through the implementation of digital, interactive and pedagogical tools. Through a better understanding of student-athletes social-psychological profile, the aim is to help student-athletes to balance sport and school and reduce youth withdrawal from sport participation. The aim is to establish a socio-psychological profile of student-athletes involved in dual careers programmes age 15-18 in Sweden. The project will provide athletes and students a virtual community of shared understandings and experiences (Mobile application, e-Book guidelines). Furthermore, using new technologies, BLA also seeks to outline, promote and enhance the social-psychological competencies, not only in sport but also in the overall school context.

Main objectives

The aim is to improve sport and school results of those involved in dual careers programmes, while enhancing the balance of these two contexts. Simultaneously, through a better understanding of their social-psychological profile, BLA also aims to reduce youth withdraw from sport participation.

Additionally, this will help them to better acknowledge and develop their key personal, social, educational and emotional competencies. Furthermore, the dissemination and scalability of this profile, will also have impact on those that are not involved in dual careers, improving, for example, their academic results and social competencies/skills. Finally, BLA will provide athletes and students a virtual community of shared understandings and experiences.

The aim with BLA is to promote education in and through sport with special focus on skills development, as well as support the implementation of the EU guidelines on dual careers of athletes.

Main work streams

The Be Like an Athlete project is based upon a mixed method approach to better examine the personal development of student-athletes involved in dual careers programmes with respect to their socio-psychological competencies. To that end, the project will be composed by the following main work streams:

WS1: Construction of BLA socio-psychological profile of student-athletes involved in dual career programmes.

WS2: Designing of BLA Mobile Application and e-Book Guidelines for good practice.

WS3: Communication of the student-athletes’ socio-psychological profile, the Mobile APP and the e-Book Guidelines.

WS4: BLA evaluation, sustainability and scalability

Results

  1. Be Like an Athlete - exploratory analysis
