The posting ceremony is a festive occasion
Previously, a thesis was made public by the doctoral student by literally nailing it to the board. This is no longer required, but it is still possible to have a public posting ceremony where you nail up a physical copy of your thesis in the library. The ceremony is now primarily a festive occasion in the doctoral defence process. The formal public posting occurs electronically in the DiVA publication database.
The format of a public posting ceremony
The public posting ceremony takes place in the Study Hall at the University Library in the Social Sciences Building. Library staff host and conduct the ceremony. It is usually held on the same day as your formal public posting, that is, the same day the thesis is published in DiVA. You can also choose to have the ceremony on a different date.
You can submit the printed copies of your doctoral thesis at the ceremony. Keep in mind that you need to bring an extra copy with the notification of submission of the doctoral thesis to nail to the board.
Reserve a date for the public posting ceremony
Use the form below to reserve a posting ceremony.
Available times
Posting ceremonies can be reserved for the following dates and times:
- 7 January–13 June 2025;
- 15 August–19 December 2025;
- any business day Monday to Friday (except during summer and Christmas holidays);
- each hour and half hour from 9:00–15:00 (not during lunchtime 12:00–13:00).
No public posting ceremonies can occur during holidays and weekends (as is the case with the formal public posting), so book well in advance if your thesis defence is scheduled to occur in January or near the summer holiday.
Make your reservation at least one week before the desired date
