Grants & Scholarships

Umeå University provides information about grants and funding bodies here, and the Faculty of Science and Technology here. The University of Gothenburg and The Swedish Institute also both have very good scholarship and grant link collections.

Scholarships for tuition fee coverage

Umeå University offers scholarships for accepted students that are non-EU citizens.

The Swedish Institute offers scholarships for international students, and also provides a good link collection for other funding bodies for students from specific countries or regions.

You can also find specific grants and scholarships for students from the following countries or regions: Turkey, South Africa, Syria and Western Balkan.

How to apply for thesis financial support

At UID, thesis students, who have been unable to find external sponsors, can be financially assisted with a fixed sum of 500 SEK. The cost will be covered by each programme's budget.

The following principles are valid until further notice when it comes to applying for allocated funding for thesis project expences of required deliverables at Umeå Institute of Design. The department can deviate from these principles if it can be considered to be in the general interest of UID. Such deviation shall always be motivated in writing.

Grants for studies or projects

The Michael Treschow Scholarship. Are you a design student with a Bachelor's degree and planning to continue your education at the Master level in Sweden? Or are you already a Master student? If so, you are welcome to apply for Michael Treschow scholarship of 100,000 SEK. (E-mail them for application information in English). Deadline late September.

Brita-Stina Nordenstedt's donation offers funds that can be used for student theses, projects, competitions, travel or attendance at conferences and symposia. Students enrolled at Umeå Institute of Design, the Umeå School of Technology and Department of Nutritional Sciences can apply. Deadline November 30.

JC Kempe's scholarship fund at UmU
Twice annually, Umeå student union announces the availability of scholarships from the SJCKMS Fund. Each semester, up to 50 000 SEK is awarded to doctoral students at Umeå University, and the purpose of these scholarships is to support students in their thesis work. Scholarships can, on occasion, be awarded to undergraduate students, and if there are few PhD students that apply for this, the Kempe foundation can prioritize to award scholarships to 3rd year BFA and MFA students. In order to be eligible to apply for the scholarships, you need to be a resident of Västerbotten, Västernorrland och Norrbotten, and a member of one of the student unions at Umeå University.

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Google has two grants to support women studying technical educations. The Google Anita Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a financial award for the academic year. A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background and demonstrated leadership. In addition, all scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to attend a retreat at Google.

The Olof Palme foundation awards funding for projects aiming at promoting international exchange, studies in peace and disarmament, promoting work against racism and xenophobia, and other projects that works for intercultural understanding and common security. Deadlines March 20 and September 20.

DRS Student Research Bursary »
Funding for students' research materials, travel, specialist equipment, expertise (for example: translation, statistics, design) etc. Deadline March 31.

Japanstiftelsen offers grants for travel and degree projects in/related to Japan, for Swedish citizens. Deadline Dec. 1.

Ångpanneföreningens Forskningsstiftelse has scholarships for student degree work outside of Sweden. Deadline early February.

Spar scholarship seeks students living with a low budget and that can handle everyday living with little money. The 3 fellowships consist of financial support of 3000 kr per month for an entire year. 

Sambla AB offers scholarships of 10,000 SEK for students who study at a Swedish university or college and already have or will study abroad.

Svensk-Danska kulturfonden offers for funding from the Helsingborg company Evers & Co's fund for Swedish researchers and students to go to Denmark. Scholarships offer funding for short-term study visits, eg in connection with exchanges, research studies, research trips, etc. A scholarship can also be granted for apprenticeships and internships in connection with vocational training

(In Swedish) Utlandsstipendium från Hans Werthén Fonden Har du tänkt vidareutveckla dig utomlands? Är du 25–35 år och har en akademisk examen på lägst masternivå, företrädesvis inom områdena teknik/naturvetenskap eller ekonomi/juridik? Då kan du senast den 4 mars 2019 söka ett stipendium från Hans Werthén Fonden vid IVA. 

Minor Field Studies (MFS)

If you are at the end of your higher education studies, you can apply for Minor Field Studies (MFS). If your application is granted, you will receive a scholarship to go to a low or middle income country to collect material for your essay or thesis for your Bachelor's or Master's degree. You must have a supervisor at Umeå University and a contact person in the host country who can help with practical matters.

Travel grants

The Google travel and conference grants. To encourage attendance at technical conferences, Google will provide selected recipients free registration and travel reimbursement for selected conferences (see web page) in Europe and North America. Grant eligibility varies by region, so please review the information on the region-specific pages. Grants will be awarded to the most qualified persons based on application review. Every applicant will be notified of their status according to the time frames specified for the region.

Travel grants for UmU PhD students and young researchers for participating, with own contribution, in conferences or for other travels related to the area of research.

Bo Rydin Foundation offers travel grants for doctoral students who wish to participate in scientific conferences and also grants for master´s thesis (30 credits). The aim of the Foundation is to promote research in the technical or natural sciences at Swedish universities and institutes within SCA´s strategic areas, hygiene and forest products..

Grants for internships or traineeships

Erasmus Traineeship As a student at Umeå University, you have the opportunity to apply for the Erasmus Scholarship for your traineeship in a European country. The scholarships is a contribution for travel, accommodation and any other expenses associated with international practice.

Sida's traineeship programme. The Traineeship Programme gives young people aged 20 30 the option of a traineeship placement in an organisation in a country with low or medium incomes. The aim of the programme is to broaden the Swedish base of resources, i.e. broaden the recruitment of young people who may work with development issues in Sweden or abroad in the future.
