Higher security when logging into Ladok

From 5 December 2023, you need to have confirmed your user identity (Umu-id) to log into Ladok if you have a Swedish personal identity number. This is so we can guarantee that it is you, and not someone else, who logs into Ladok using your Umu-id.

Ladok student registry is the system that the University uses to log course registrations and official decisions such as exam results. A higher security level is now being introduced to everyone logging into Ladok to ensure that access to your user data is legitimate.

Please note that upgrading your assurance level only applies if you have a full Swedish personal identity number reported in Ladok. This number must consist of your birth date and four digits, no letters. If you do not have such a number in Ladok, you cannot upgrade but can continue to log into Ladok as usual.

How to upgrade your assurance level

Many students already have the increased assurance level. Follow the link below to learn if you already have the level needed, or to upgrade if necessary. You only need to complete this user identity confirmation once.

Instructions on how to upgrade your assurance level.

If you haven't upgraded your assurance level in time

After 5 December, you can not log into Ladok unless you have the increased assurance level for your Umu-ID. However, you can still carry out the upgrade of your assurance level after 5 December so that you can then log into Ladok again.

If you need to use Ladok after 5 December but haven't had time to upgrade your assurance level, Infocenter can help you get a study certificate. Your department can temporarily help you with, for example, registering for a course or signing up for an exam.

To get help in upgrading your assurance level, please contact the Servicedesk.

If you have trouble logging into Ladok after having upgraded your assurance level

If you are unable to log in after upgrading your assurance level, you may need to clear cache files and cookies in your web browser. Here are instructions on how to do this.

Background

Umeå University is a member of the identity federation SWAMID (Swedish Academic Identity Federation), which among other things, establishes rules for secure accounts. One of these rules concern account security levels, so-called Identity Assurance Level, abbreviated as AL.

By adopting assurance levels, Umeå University can ensure that the person with access to a university account is the person intended. Identity assurance level 1 (AL1) is the lowest level and means that the user may have presented their credentials themselves, whereas for the higher identity assurance level (AL2), the organisation has confirmed the user’s identity through identification. Identification can take place by the user logging in through their BankID or Freja eID+ or by showing their identity card to a designated member of staff.

Recent global security threats and increased requirements for stricter IT security are two reasons for SWAMID levelling up their demand for higher assurance levels for Ladok users.
