Från historiska skogslandskap till framtidens skogar: människa och skog i Europa

Högre seminariet i arkeologi och miljöarkeologi bjuder in till seminarium med gästforskaren Natália Hurajtová, Slovak Academy of Sciences. Seminariet ges på engelska och har den engelska titeln "From Past Woodlands to Future Forests: Reconstructing Historical Human–Woodland Interactions across Three European Regions".

Abstract (på engelska)

Understanding the development of forest ecosystems and historical human–woodland interactions is increasingly important in the context of ongoing climate change and biodiversity conservation. This project aims to reconstruct historical human–woodland interactions through the anthracological analysis of archaeological charcoal. The research will focus on three contrasting European regions in Sweden, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, generating new evidence of historical woodland use in areas that remain unevenly represented in archaeobotanical research.

The project will advance beyond the current state of the art by integrating archaeobotanical results with information on present-day woodland composition, use, and management at the selected sites. This interdisciplinary approach will provide a deeper understanding of the environments of past communities, their interactions with natural resources, and changes in historical landscapes. The resulting data will be made available through established research databases, supporting their future reuse in archaeological, ecological, and forestry research. By combining archaeobotany, palaeoecology, and current vegetation data, the project will develop a comparative framework for assessing the historical development of European forests and the relevance of environmental archaeological evidence to biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, and the protection of natural and cultural heritage.
