Välkommen till TOC-symposiet, som är ett i raden av årliga möten kallat ”Trender inom organisk kemi” (TOC) med temat ”Kemisk biologi”! Symposiet arrangeras av Umeå universitet och Svenska kemisamfundet.

The topic of this symposium will be centered on the ever-increasing development of smart chemistry-based tools tostudy and apply in biology. Bioorthogonal chemistry, chemical protein synthesis and the study of protein posttranslational modifications (protein glycosylation, phosphorylation and lipidation etc.) are three important topics covered at the Chemical Biology TOC symposium. Chemical protein synthesis by native or expressed protein ligation or selective bioorthogonal chemistry can be used to label proteins with fluorophores to localize and study biological processes in a time-resolved manner. The methods can also be used to functionalize proteins with handles to study posttranslational modifications such as protein glycosylation or to cross-link and identify protein-binding partners, or to prepare antibody-drug conjugates to be applied as potential cancer therapeutics in medicine. Another important topic covered at the meeting is the development of new mass spectrometry-based proteomic techniques for the identification of potential protein targets of drug candidates. Chemistry-based tools and techniques to study epigenetic/regulatory modifications of RNA and DNA, DNA lesions and their repair will further be covered. An additional topic that will be presented is prebiotic chemistry, addressing the questions of how key building blocks required for chemical and, later, biological evolution were first formed on the early earth. We believe that the presented topics would be of interest to a broad audience in academia and industry.
