Leadership in the Outdoors

Welcome! Here you will find important and useful information about your course. Please read it carefully. If you have questions regarding the course, please use the contact form below. This course runs on campus and in between the dates 2 September - 1 October. Enjoy your studies with us!

How to start

  • 1. Reply to your offer

    Have you been admitted to a course or programme, but do not wish to keep your place? Then you should decline your offer by logging in to your account at Universityadmissions.se. In doing so, you free up your place to someone who is on the waiting list.

    Support for students with disabilities

    If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    Install MFA for a more secure login
    To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

    If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    Help! It´s not working

    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • 3. Course registration

    This course uses online course registration. You register by entering the Student Web (see instructions below). IMPORTANT! Registration must be made within the period 26 August and 3 September 2024.

    It is very important that you register during these dates. If you have not registered before the deadline you may loose your seat on the course. After the registration window has closed vacant seats are offered to students on waiting lists.

    The course may not have a traditional schedule but a Study Guide instead. Please visit your online platform, https://www.canvas.umu.se/, for more information. If you have a schedule it will be available under "My Page" in the Student Web four (4) weeks before the course starts (requires Umu-Id and password). You can also use the link above to search for your schedule by term, course code and application code.

About the course

  • Course information

    This course is held at Umeå University campus and in the Umeå countryside.

    Here, you will conduct studies both by yourself and as part of a group. You, with assistance of the course coordinator, literature, lectures, and seminars will complete your assignments. Much within the course is created around the participants' activities where all students' previous experiences and questions are equally important.

    Communication between students and teachers will take place mainly in the classroom but also through the online learning platform Canvas. All our courses provides course information, additional literature and support in terms of resources, such as pre-recorded online lectures and discussion boards, online.

    Outdoor adventure

    This course includes a two-day outdoor adventure of hiking and paddling and as such, it is imperative for your own safety, to be able to swim. At this hike you will be introduced to our northern Swedish climate and beautiful nature.

    During the overnight stay we will sleep outside, in tents or wind shelters, and you will cook your own meals (in small groups) in the outdoor environment. To be able to participate in outdoor activities you need to have arranged with the following equipment and also prepare for possible precipitation.

    • Backpack (essential) to carry the following:
    • Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are beneficial).
    • A warm jacket/Fleece (average temperature in Umeå in September daytime +14˚C and +5˚C nighttime).
    • Wind/waterproof gear.
    • Dry bags (to protect clothes and sleeping gear in the backpack).
    • Multipurpose footwear (hiking boots/shoes. No flip-flops).
    • Waterbottle (Swedish tap water is fresh and drinkable).
    • Something to eat out of, and with.
    • Personal gear; torch, hygiene products (toiletries) etc.
    • Sleeping mattress
    • Sleeping bag
    • Voluntary: Bandana/buff or a mosquito head net, hat, and gloves              

    We will provide outdoor cooking kits, tents and sleeping mattresses, however, If you’ll have your own gear you wish to use, please do so.

    Some of these items are available to rent. The rental shop at IKSU Sports Centre  can provide some of it. Also the Fritidsbanken (a library for sports and leisure equipment) at Ålidhem centre can provide some gear to rent for free. Both these places is found at walking distance to the Umeå University campus.

    At the introduction of the course and/or the outdoor adventure, your teachers will go through a more detailed packing list and let you know what they will be bringing.

    You can access the online course platform Canvas with your Umu-Id four weeks before the course starts. You must log in before the 3 September 2024, 23.55 pm (CET).

    The website for current students has all sorts of information about services, support, legal and practical matters at Umeå University. You can sign in to the learning platforms, see your schedule and course overview, get a study certificate, apply for a degree or sign up for an examination.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.

    If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

    To get the card, you need to apply for it. Here’s how to apply for the UmU card.

  • Join a student union

    There are three student unions at Umeå University:

    • Umeå Student Union
    • Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology
    • Umeå Medical and Health Sciences Student Union.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.

  • Access to Microsoft Office 365

    Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
