About the course

During the course, students are trained in specifying, planning, carrying out and presenting an independent thesis project. The course builds on selected first cycle courses, and goes deeper into the selected subject matter than ordinary courses in mathematics. The course gives an introduction to the concept of research within the subject, as regards approaching a question, collecting and analysing background material and presenting research questions and conclusions. A central part of the course is producing a written report, and presenting one's work orally and in written form at seminars.

Required Knowledge

Courses in Mathematics, minimum 60 ECTS, including 7,5 ECTS on bachelor level or equivalent. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English 5/A. Where the language of instruction is Swedish, applicants must prove proficiency in Swedish to thel level required for basic eligibilty for higher studies.


Guaranteed place Applicants in some programs at Umeå University have guaranteed admission to this course. The number of places for a single course may therefore be limited.
