About the course package

The exchange term at Advanced Product Design Programme provides the students with professional tools, methods and a creative mindset to work with the development and design of the best possible solution for a given problem or identified design opportunity. The aim is at identifying and defining the problem before the conceptualization phase, with emphasis on problem identification and definition as the basic starting point in the design process.
The studies are project-based and often carried out in collaboration with industrial partners, research units or local authorities. Most projects concern problems that the students identify themselves, problems that have not already been solved countless times by others. This implies less emphasis on trendy, fashionable consumer products and more on professional products for qualified users. This includes product areas such as the medico-technical industry, design for the disabled, professional tools and equipment, public services and equipment and a variety of product applications for emerging technologies.

5ID208 Sound in Industrial Design 7,5 credits
The course contains specialised studies within the field of creating and designing sound in combination with form studies and product interaction and consists of the following sections:

  1. Experiment with sound, imagery and interaction (3 credits)
    This section contains short creative exercises where students in groups explore in practise the connections between sound, imagery and interaction and the opportunities of combining and utilizing sound together with design. The students are also introduced to work methods for defining a sound design, relevant hardware for recording and software for sound processing.
  2. Project work (4.5 credits)
    This section contains a creative project where students in groups analyse the potential of creating a new industrial design solution where sound design, form and interaction are combined. The results are presented with two- and three-dimensional materials with adherent sound demonstrations.

5ID209 Product Analysis and Construction 7,5 credits
This course introduces to the complexities of product development with a focus on construction, material selections and production techniques. The course also includes a course in parametric modelling and Rapid Prototyping. The course consists of the three following sections:

  1. Parametric modelling (1.5 credits)
    This section gives specialised knowledge in 3D modelling through a number of small exercises.
  2. Design assignment (1.5 credits)
    This section includes a design assignment where the student will be asked to create a new design for the existing product and develop this using 2D and 3D medias before the design is modelled digitally.
  3. Product analysis (4.5 credits)
    This section contains the analysis of the structure and construction of an existing product. The construction will then be redesigned with 3D modelling software with the purpose of creating files for prototype production with Rapid Prototyping (RPT) In order to create a full-functioning prototype, the students will assembly the RPT model parts with existing component.

5ID210 Project 2: Strategic Product Design 15 credits
The course includes advanced studies in the field of strategic design, brand identity and strategic product development. The course is often carried out in collaboration with predetermined company or brand and consists of the following phases:

  1. Strategic design seminar (4.5 credits)
    This course phase includes the introduction to a company, existing products and the analysis of the overall brand impression that these expresses and the present and future market situation. Methods for analysing the brand appearance of products will be introduced through practical exercises, the result of these will be shared through de-briefings and presentations. Most of these activities will be done in groups. This phase ends with the students defining a project relevant to the scope of the course and formulates this in a written design brief.
  2. Strategic design project (10.5 credits)
    This part includes project work focused to explore the possibilities for design and development of new product solutions that conceptually, visual and functionally respects the desired characteristics and brand values defined by the students. This phase ends with a final presentation and the submission of a visual report summarizing the student's work process during the course.


This course package is an opportunity for students who is doing exchange studies at the MFA Programme in Advanced Product design to apply for one more semester.

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS credits in the field of Design + Portfolio. 5ID223 Introduction course APD 7,5 ECTS, 5ID117 CAID-Advanced level, step 1 3 ECTS, 5ID120 CAID-Advanced level, step 1 for APD 4,5 ECTS, 5ID224 Project 1: Methodology in Product Design 15 ECTS or equivalent. English B/6.

Selection

Selection is based upon submitted portfolio material and motivation letter. For acceptance, artistic talent and design aptitude is essential. Students applying for courses within a double degree exchange agreement, within the departments own agreements will be given first priority. Then will - in turn - candidates within the departments own agreements, faculty agreements, central exchange agreements and other departmental agreements be selected.
