Master's Programme in IT Management

Welcome to the Master's Programme in IT Management, autumn term 2023! On this page you will find important information about how to register for the programme, links to welcome greeting and schedule for the first course, as well as contact information to the programme coordinator and our Student Support. You can also read more about the programme, the university and student life. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us by using the form below.

How to start

  • 1. Your offer

    You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

    If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

    If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

    Support for students with disabilities

    If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Programme registration

    Introduction meeting
    You start off the programme by being registered for the first course.

    The first course of the programme is Management Information Systems (15 credits).

    You must be registered for that course, in order to be allowed to follow the programme and to get your results recorded.

    For this course, registration takes place during an introduction meeting on August 28, 2023. If you do not attend the introduction and have not notified Student Support Informatics in advance, you will not be registered and risk losing your place (seat).

    Schedule is published here no later than 30 days before the start of the course

About the programme

  • Please confirm your acceptance

    You do not have to reply to the offer to attend the programme at University Admissions, but we at the Department of Informatics kindly request you to confirm your acceptance to studentsupport.informatik@umu.se as soon as possible - but no later than June 21, 2023.

    Also make sure to check all the required documents and materials outlined on the University Admission page (conditionals) and their deadlines, so that you know if you need to submit or bring academic documents before your arrival.

    If you decide not to attend the programme, please make sure to decline your offer. You can do this at universityadmissions.se. Log in to your account, go to "Applications" and follow the instructions.

    It´s important to decline your offer as soon as you know that you will not be attending. This makes the place available for students on the waiting list.

  • Programme information

    Hello, and welcome to the IT Management programme @ Umeå University. We hope that you are happy with your choice – because we are certainly happy to have you!

    My name is Ted Saarikko and I am the programme coordinator for the IT Management programme. I also help out with student counselling for graduate-level courses. If you have any questions regarding progression through the IT Management programme, elective courses, or getting your degree, please contact me at ted.saarikko@umu.se. I am also an associate professor at the department of Informatics, so don’t be too surprised if you run into me during some of the courses.

    For matters related to student registration or certificates, please contact our razor-sharp and lightning-fast administrators at studentsupport.informatik@umu.se.

    The first course, Management Information Systems (2IN195), serves as an introduction to the themes covered in the programme. Please see the syllabus and/or welcome greeting for that course for more details. See below for an outline of upcoming terms.

    The autumn term starts on August 28th, 2023 and ends on January 14th, 2024. Please note that there is no course activity between December 23rd and January 2nd.

    The introduction to your first course will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 28th in room MIT.C.413. You will find room MIT.C.413 on the top floor in the MIT-building.

    Durations of terms

    Year 1:
    Autumn term starts on August 28, 2023 and ends on January 14, 2024.
    Spring term starts on January 15, 2024 and ends on June 2, 2024.

    Year 2:
    Autumn term starts on September 2, 2024 and ends on January 19, 2025.
    Spring term starts on January 20, 2025 and ends on June 8, 2025.

  • The Student web

    The website for current students has all sorts of information about services, support, legal and practical matters at Umeå University. You can sign in to the learning platforms, see your schedule and course overview, get a study certificate, apply for a degree or sign up for an examination.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular semester, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but no later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme or course.

    If you will have student housing through the Housing Office at Umeå University you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the semester (Autumn) or the same day as the semester starts (Spring).

  • Welcome Fair

    Are you a new student at Umeå University? Visit the Welcome Fair – a perfect opportunity to learn what our university and Umeå can offer. The fair normally takes place in the beginning of each semester.

  • Activate your user account

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester in order to, for instance:

    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • register for courses
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

    For exchange students and tuition fee paying students 
    If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

    To get the card, you need to apply for it. Here’s how to apply for the UmU card.

    There are three student unions at Umeå University:

    • Umeå Student Union
    • Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology
    • Umeå Medical and Health Sciences Student Union.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.

  • Access to Microsoft Office 365

    Students at Umeå University have free access to the programmes of Microsoft Office 365. This means that you have access to Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Whiteboard Forms, your student email and other services which can facilitate your studies and your collaboration with other students. To access Office 365 you need to activate your UmU-id.
