Erik Elmroth receives Nordea's Innovation Prize 2026

NEWS Professor Erik Elmroth has been named the recipient of Nordea's and Umeå University's Innovation Prize for Research Utilisation. He receives the award for his ability to translate world-leading research in cloud computing into solutions that are put to concrete use in society.

Many of today’s digital services rely on cloud technologies and large-scale distributed systems. These are the fields in which Erik Elmroth, Professor at the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University, has built his research. His work includes developing ways to design digital systems that remain stable and efficient even under heavy use.

“It is, of course, a great honour to be recognised in this way – and it is especially rewarding to receive appreciation for work that I personally consider important,” he says.

Research that strenghtens Swedish industry

The award particularly highlights his ability to combine high-level research with entrepreneurship and strategic leadership. As co-founder of the software company Elastisys, Erik Elmroth has successfully commercialised research results, contributing to reliable digital solutions for critical societal functions and strengthening Swedish industry.

“Since cloud services and large-scale distributed systems permeate society today, it is important that we can create a better understanding of how to make these systems as functional, efficient, and robust as possible,” says Erik Elmroth.

His work is not limited to technology development but also focuses on strengthening competence in society. Through education and research environments, he helps ensure that more people gain the specialist expertise needed in this field.

“In addition to the importance of the research results themselves, this kind of research also has great value in supplying industry with skilled researchers and specialists," says Erik Elmroth.

Alternatives to American cloud services

His work has also contributed to building collaborations between academia and industry, as well as strengthening Sweden's position in digital infrastructure and AI.

At a time when Europe's dependence on American cloud services is being widely discussed, he sees a need to develop alternatives.

“I hope that my research group and I have contributed knowledge and trained individuals who make it possible to create competitive Swedish and European alternatives, especially for critical societal needs,” says Erik Elmroth.

About Nordea's Innovation Prize

Nordea's Innovation Prize for Research Utilisation is presented by Nordea and Umeå University to recognise outstanding contributions to innovation, implementation and commercialisation of research results. The prize amounts to SEK 100,000 and is awarded at the University's Annual Celebration in October.

Previous recipients include Inger Eliasson of the Department of Education (2025) and Mattias Forsell, Johan Normark and Julia Wigren Byström of the Department of Clinical Microbiology (2024).
