Inaugural reception for Umeå University international scholarship recipients

NEWS The first reception event for international scholarship recipients at Umeå University was held on Monday 14 October at the scenic Umeå Arts Campus.

Over 70 scholarship recipients from 31 countries that have begun their studies in 2012 and 2013 were invited to the mingle gathering with canapés and refreshments.

This includes 22 Umeå University Scholarships for master’s degree studies that were awarded on the basis of academic merit and which include a full or partial reduction of tuition fees. 19 students received funding to study master’s programmes at the Umeå Institute of Design and seven students in the Master’s Programme in Public Health received funding from the Erling-Persson Family Foundation.

An additional 22 students were recipients of scholarships from the Swedish Institute which covered both living costs and tuition fees. 

The international scholarship recipients represent countries including China, India, Unitd States, Turkey, Kenya, Iran, Cameroon, Australia, Japan and Canada, among others. 

The students were welcomed with speeches from Anders Fällström, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University and Per A Nilsson, Director of International Affairs.

Siyuan Fang from China is a first year student in the Master’s programme in Transportation Design at the top-ranked Umeå Institute of Design and was grateful to earn a scholarship. He already has high praise. “The programme is extraordinary because the instructors are real designers with real industry experience,” he said. “They give practical tips that can be applied.”

Nangah Angyrette from Cameroon is a first-year student in the Master’s in Tourism programme and has a strong desire to continue at the research level. “The scholarship has opened a new door to cement my previous educations for improved career opportunities,” said Nangah. “The atmosphere in Umeå helped me to calm down and focus, as well as developing my own ideas.”

Another joyful scholarship recipient at the reception was Bilal Saleem from Pakistan. He is a first-year student in the Master’s in Marketing programme at the Umeå School of Business and Economics and had only but accolades:

“This scholarship will help me develop my knowledge of the European markets and consumer behavior,” he said. “I feel very special to be here at Umeå University. “The people in Umeå respect you for being human and are non-judgmental. The city truly encourages the people to be involved.”

Scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year

The application period is currently open for autumn 2014 entry, and international scholarship funding opportunities are available for over 25 master’s degree programmes at Umeå University.

The scholarship application form for the academic year 2014-15 is scheduled to open on 1 November 2013.
