Karey Helms Returns to UID

NEWS In a exciting development, Karey Helms, alumna of the MFA Interaction Design Programme, has returned to Umeå Institute of Design (UID) as an Associate Professor of Design.

Text: Jens Persson

Helms, who has made significant contributions to the field of design, expressed her excitement about rejoining the UID community. “I’m flooded with such wonderful memories and already again feel the incredible support, energy, and creativity that has brought me back. I’m very much looking forward to reconnecting with familiar faces and getting to know new people and ideas,” she said.

Merging ethics and innovation in design

Helms’ research is rooted in care ethics and more-than-human theories of collaborative survival. Her work primarily focuses on children’s relations with nature and explores new roles of technology for multi-species flourishing.

She has a passion for “living” materials and their potential in design. These materials, which blur the boundaries between the organic and the digital, breathe life into our creations.

In her design practice, Helms embraces performative and experimental methods. She believes that innovation thrives when we step outside our comfort zones and push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Ethics are at the core of her practice. She advocates for responsible design that considers the impact on people, the environment, and society as a whole.

With Karey Helms’ return, UID continues to foster an environment that encourages innovation, creativity, and ethical design practices.
