Spring 2011 international courses among most applied to in Sweden

According to recent statistics from The Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services (VHS), Umeå University has three courses among the top 20 most applied to in Sweden for the spring term 2011. Additionally, the Master’s degree programme in Molecular Biology is one of the most attractive for international applicants.
The majority of applications are from prospective students from countries outside of the EU (European Union), EEA (European Economic Area) and Switzerland, and they are not required to pay tuition for the spring term 2011 or the entirely a degree programme. Starting with the autumn 2011 term, non-EU/EEA students will be required to pay tuition fees. All courses and programmes at Umeå University with English language instruction are open to Swedish, European and international applicants.
The number of students applying to international master's programs at higher education institutions Sweden for spring 2011 increased by 43 per cent from the previous year.
The Master’s degree programme in Molecular Biology at Umeå University received 2041 applications for spring 2011, making it the 11th most popular degree programme in the country. 521 of the applicants selected the programme as their first choice.
As for single-subject courses, Umeå University has three that were ranked as first choice by applicants. They are: Information Technology and its Applications with 642 first choice applications, Human Rights and Rule of Law with 429 first choice applications and Statistics for Business and Economics with 355 first choice (1988 total) applications. All have English as the language of instruction.
International applicants will receive notification of admission in early November. The spring term 2011 begins on 17 January 2011.
