UTRI makes Umeå University lead by example

NEWS Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, honorary doctor at Umeå University and Director-General of the World Health Organization, will be one of the keynote speakers at the Umeå Transformation Research Initiative (UTRI) digital kick-off on 30 November and 1 December. We got a quick word with him before the webinar.

Text: Jonas Ericson

Why are initiatives such as UTRI important?

“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that ‘business as usual’ will not suffice to meet the enormous challenges we face today. Combatting this pandemic has required skills and expertise far beyond science and medicine, including everything from behavioural science to digital technologies.

Initiatives such as UTRI clearly show that only extensive co-operation between disciplines, will equip us to achieve the global sustainability goals.”

What role can a university like Umeå University play in the pursuit of the global sustainability goals?

“Umeå is leading by example with UTRI and will provide a model for other institutions and organizations that are serious about achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. We must think outside the box to establish creative co-operations for the benefit of the whole world.”

The UTRI kick-off will be held on Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December as an online webinar.

Registration no later than 25 November.
