Digital kick-off for the new sustainability investment UTRI

NEWS The new Umeå Transformation Research Initiative (UTRI) supports increased collaborations in sustainability research at Umeå University, but also welcomes collaborations with other universities and stakeholders in the field. One of the keynote speakers at the digital kick-off is Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, honorary doctor at Umeå University and Director-General of the World Health Organization.

Despite Umeå University’s many strong research environments, there has been no forum where researchers can gather for new funding calls in the field, where ideas can take form in new meetings, groupings and events. UTRI aims to bring together different disciplinary perspectives, individuals and research groups that would not otherwise meet.

“I hope UTRI will give us new ideas, stronger research and lead to researchers in different parts of Umeå University increase their collaborations for a sustainable transition,” says Joacim Rocklöv, Professor at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine and one of the founders of UTRI.

There are also smaller funding opportunities for new research collaborations and now during the corona pandemic, it is also possible to get help in organising online conferences. Read more on the website, where all UTRI events are also announced on an ongoing basis.

3.6 million from the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic funds will, over a two-year period, go to the financing of UTRI and Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson believes that their aims are in line with Umeå University’s vision.

“This really hooks into how we think and the global sustainability goals. Being an initiative from the researchers themselves is also particularly inspiring. UTRI will enable us to connect skills from various areas and become even better at acting across disciplines.”
