SCAPIS Umeå

Research network SCAPIS stands for Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study and is a collaboration between six universities in Sweden; Gothenburg, Malmö/Lund, Stockholm, Uppsala, Linköping and Umeå. It is a Swedish research study in heart, vascular and lung medicine.

The aim of SCAPIS is to predict and prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

SCAPIS is currently a nationwide, open-label, population-based cohort for the study of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease.

Description of SCAPIS

In the later part of the 20th century, a number of population-based studies were initiated in Sweden with the aim of understanding the development of cardiovascular and metabolic (diabetes) disease (e.g. MONICA and VIP in northern Sweden), and these have generated important knowledge. However, these are many years old and the need for modern studies with new techniques including imaging has become apparent. This research initiative eventually led to the SCAPIS study, made possible thanks to the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation.

The SCAPIS study is a unique population-based prospective study with more than 30,000 randomly selected people aged 50-64 years at inclusion (hereafter referred to as SCAPIS 1). The study is a collaboration between Gothenburg, Lund, Linköping, Uppsala and Umeå Universities and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. The study is also in collaboration with the university hospitals in each location. A pilot project was conducted in Gothenburg in 2012, and data collection from the study's baseline surveys took place between 2013 and 2018.

SCAPIS 1 followed a national protocol focusing on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors. The heart and lungs were examined by computed tomography (CT) including measurement of coronary artery calcium (CAC) and angiography of the coronary arteries. The carotid arteries were scanned by ultrasound and lung function was checked. In addition, a comprehensive questionnaire largely based on the MONICA and VIP questionnaires was used, and for dietary intake the FFQ Mini-Meal-Q was used. In SCAPIS, physical activity was assessed using an accelerometer worn for one week. In addition to the national protocol, each study site added surveys, and in Umeå, participants completed a Umeå-specific questionnaire and the majority underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
