Research project Gender studies poses many-faceted challenges to traditional forms of knowledge production. The interdisciplinary organization of Umeå Advanced Gender Studies consists of the National Graduate School of Gender Studies (key facility for rejuvenation and succession); the Centre for Women Studies; the Centre for Gender Research within the faculty of Medicine, the JUSTE-group within the Dept of Education; The Umeå Seminar on Law and Gender and the Gender Stuies Group at the Faculty of Arts (all in Umeå) and the Centre for Gender STudies at Mid Sweden University.

The objective of the programme Challenging Gender is to make use of existing empirical and theoretical gender research to accomplish a fertile ground for European and global collaboration within the five themes of the programmme: Democracy/Social Justice, Emotions, Violence, Health and Normalization. These themes will create an interdisciplinary arena for reflection and theoretical development.
