Nils Skoglund

My research concerns resource recovery in renewable energy systems and the work involves X-ray analytical techniques, both at the university and at synchrotrons.

Research profile

My scientific work with the Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory aims at enabling nutrient and resource recovery from the energy sector by using fuel design with renewable energy resources to improve the ash quality and thereby, contribute to the foundation of a sustainable society. Even though the goal is common, the desired fuel blend compositions are likely different for the forestry sector, agricultural sector, and waste streams from society.

Currently, the most important research topic in my work involves fundamental studies of phosphate structures in ash fractions since it has been shown that it is possible to aim for the formation of certain phosphates in thermochemical conversion of biomass and waste streams. Some of these structures are potentially suitable growth of plants but it is important to determine if heavy metal mobility would be affected during this plant uptake of phosphorus and potassium found in the structures. Establishing synchrotron-based analytical methods within my field of research will not only be of great assistance in reaching a sustainable society, but will also allow me to assist other research groups with user training in the future.

In addition to these detailed structural studies I am working in a range of different research projects where such a fuel design approach is developed together with industrial partners and academic partners. The Swedish strategic research programme Bio4Energy has been a great resource in these endeavours through promotion of interdisciplinary work and research together with different research groups from several universities.

I mainly teach at the advanced level in the Master of Science programme in Energy Engineering, where I am also part of the programme council and I supervise several M.Sc. thesis projects from various programmes. I also contribute to third cycle studies as a co-supervisor of Ph.D. students across several different universities.
