Approved leave from, non-completion of, or parallel studies

If you want to study more than 45 credits per term at Umeå University you need to apply for parallel studies. If you want to get an approved leave from studies you need to apply for that. If you want to interrupt your studies, you need to apply for non-completion of studies.

Apply for parallel studies

If you want to study more than 45 credits per term at Umeå University, you must apply for parallel studies.

In order for your application to be granted, you need to already have completed at least 60 credits.

Send the form to the address listed on it, or attach the form as a supplement to your application for the coming term on Universityadmissions.se. You can also submit the form in the information desk at the Infocenter.

Approved leave from, or non-completion of, studies

Apply for approved leave from studies

If you have been admitted to studies and wish to take a break in your studies with the aim of resuming them at another time, you can apply for an approved leave from studies. You must have specific reasons to be able to get an approved leave from studies granted. Therefore, it is important that you specify your reasons when applying.

Once granted an approved leave from studies, this means that you are guaranteed a place to the course or study programme for a specified term if you sign up for the resumption of studies in due time.

Submit the application to your department or the person responsible for the course or study programme.

Rules on approved leave from studies are provided in the rules for study administration at first- and second-cycle levels (in Swedish, "regler för studieadministration på grund- och avancerad nivå"). You can find it in the Swedish version of the Legal Framework at Umeå University.

Notify non-completion of studies

If you are registered on a course or study programme and want to interrupt these studies, you can notify non-completion of studies.

By notifying non-completion of studies, you lose your place on the course or programme in question. After that, you are no longer guaranteed a place if you wish to resume your studies on that particular course or study programme at a later time. By notifying non-completion of studies, you may also give another person the possibility to be offered a place on the course or programme.

To interrupt your studies in a course

If you want to interrupt your studies in a course within 3 weeks after the course started, you do this on the student website. Sign in using you Umu-id.

Learn more about how to do an "early" interruption of course

If more than 3 weeks have passed after the course start date when you want to interrupt your studies, you shall use this form instead.
