Högre seminariet i filosofi och vetenskapsteori bjuder in till seminarium med Alex Sandgren, "Law Abiding Causal Decision Theory" (joint work with Timothy Williamson).
Abstract
In this paper we discus a recent argument against Causal Decision Theory (CDT) based on cases in which agents bet on the truth of certain deterministic laws. I discuss three ways the defender of CDT might resist the argument, one based on rigid designation of the actual laws, one based on an impossible worlds semantics for counterfactuals, and one based on characterizing the causal dependence in non-counterfactual terms. W argue that all three options are promising (the first two are more promising than the third) and so the argument against CDT based betting on laws is not successful.
