Öppen föreläsning med professor Gunther Kress

NYHET Öppen föreläsning med professor Gunther Kress, University College, London, med rubriken: "Multimodality, Communication, and Learning: old questions in a social semiotic perspective".

Onsdag 23/9 kl 13.15 – 14.45, Humanisthuset, Hörsal E

Abstract: The social, the communicational, and with these, the semiotic landscape are not what they used to be. Yet many of the questions from that former world and its landscapes continue, though in new form; and some changes have taken place which pose entirely new questions.

Each one of the three terms in the title provides an instance of this. We can now see, for instance, that meanings are made through means that go well beyond those of writing and speech.Multimodality, Communication, and Learning: old questions in a social semiotic perspective.

"The social" in which we now find ourselves has moved from hierarchical to a much more horizontal organization - even if often more in ideological form than in our lived experience.

That requires that "communication" should be fundamentally rethought. Lastly, "learning" has long since escaped the bounds of institutional frames: in fact we can see that it never had been 'contained' by these at all.

Using examples from research that I have done with colleagues in different places, I will attempt to show how the three themes of the talk are everywhere connected.

Maybe I can show that this perspective allows us – forces us even – to reconsider many taken-for-granted assumptions about this field.
