Last week the Department of Language Studies welcomed Professor Jim Cummins from the University of Toronto, Canada. During his stay he visited schools in the region and the Umeå Centre of Competence in Multilingualism. He gave an open lecture for 150 teachers and researchers attending from many parts of northern Sweden, held workshops with staff and students and discussed the Sami language situation with researchers and Sami organisations. He also much enjoyed joining in with the Gammlia celebrations for Swedish National day. The visit was much appreciated by everyone involved, providing useful input for all. Prof Cummins also expressed his thanks for all he had learnt during the visit. His visit has provided inspiration for all, particularly regarding newcomer students and minority groups.
