Conference grants 2026
Deadline: continuous throughout the year
Are you planning a conference that will be held in Umeå? Then you can apply for funding for it! Umeå municipality, Region Västerbotten and Umeå University annually sets aside funding for conferences.
The grant amount is based on the estimated number of attendees, with a maximum total of SEK 60,000.
National conferences – SEK 200 per person
Nordic conferences – SEK 225 per person
International conferences – SEK 275 per person

Are you looking to carry out activities that promote research about sustainable transformation? Apply for funding up to SEK 80,000, and receive both financial support and practical assistance. Activities can for example be seminars, symposia, workshops, panel discussions, conferences, writing retreats, pilot projects, or time for writing research proposals.

The Dr P Håkansson Foundation is announcing SEK 8 million in funding for early-career researchers in medicinal chemistry, physiology and food chemistry at Swedish universities.

Funding for promotion of scientific research in human nutrition
Deadline: 1 March 2026
Henning and Johan Throne-Holst Foundation awards 1–2 million SEK annually for research in human nutrition and related sciences in Sweden and Norway. It is now possible to apply for funding for three different types of scholarships:
– Scholarships to Nordic researchers with a doctorate for postdoctoral studies at leading foreign research centers
– Scholarships to doctoral students who need to study at a leading international center for a certain period of their education
– Grants to researchers with a doctorate for research projects at universities in Sweden or Norway

Nordforsk: Call for proposals on disruptive technologies
Deadline: 3 March
In January 2026, Nordforsk will open a call for proposals on research projects that aims to harness disruptive technology to address global societal challenges and accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Disrubted technogoly is in this case defined as “an innovation whose application replaces or radically alters systems, processes and/or behaviours to have transformative economic or societal impacts." Nordforsk will support up to 12 research projects, and each proposal can be approved up to 17 million NOK.

Early-career researchers with a career age of 0–3 years can apply for up to SEK 1.5 million on average per year for up to four year long research projects where you formulate your own question within Formas’ areas of responsibility: Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning.

Nordforsk: call for Exploratory Networks within Social Sciences and Humanities
Deadline: 15 April
In January, NordForsk will open a funding call for Nordic exploratory research networks, to support the development of co-operation between early-career researchers in humanities and social sciences. The Nordic partners in a network proposal can apply for a total maximum of 1.5 MNOK. The intention is to fund the Nordic participation in approximately 22 research networks under this call.

Nordforsk aim to fund up to 5 Nordic or Nordic-Baltic research projects on education systems that will explore how education can contribute to resilient, equitable, and future-ready societies. Maximum amount of funding that can be applied for by the Nordic partners of a project proposal is 13 MNOK.

Mistra: Defence and sustainability in a new geopolitical era

Mistra is now having a call open for research programme proposals that will strengthen the environmental strategy dimension of the increasingly topical issues of security, defence and preparedness in Sweden and Europe. Of particular interest are synergies between civil and military operations. Apply for up to 40 million SEK over five years.

The Carl Trygger Foundation for Scientific Research supports research in the natural sciences that is important for Sweden in areas such as physics, chemistry, technology, biology, ecology, geology, as well as forest and agricultural science. The Industrial Doctoral School for Research and Innovation (IDS) announces funding for a doctoral student in collaborative projects. As a researcher at Umeå University, qualified to act as principal supervisor to a doctoral student, you can apply for doctoral resources together with an external organisation as co-applicant. IDS funds 50 percent of the doctoral student’s salary for 48 months.

Every third year
Are you a young researcher aspiring to lead pioneering research in natural sciences, technology, or medicine? Seize the opportunity to join the SSF flagship programme, Future Research Leaders. 16 researchers will receive SEK 15 million each, alongside comprehensive leadership training over five years. To be eligible, you must have completed your doctoral degree between 2018 and 2020, and work full-time at a Swedish university or research institute during the grant period.
