The KBC Departments and Collaborative Partners

KBC comprises several departments from three faculties at Umeå University (UmU) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

The KBC Departments

Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry has about 220 employees, of whom 40 PhD students.

The Department of Physics

The Department of Physics belongs to the Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University.

Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences

We gather researchers, teachers and students in the area of environment and nature.

Department of Plant Physiology

Our main activities are academic research in experimental plant biology.

Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory (TEC-Lab)

The research area is within thermochemical energy conversion, mainly focusing on biomass but also on other sol...

Department of Molecular Biology

The Department is affiliated to both the Faculty of Science and Technology and to the Faculty of Medicine.

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics

Scientists at the department study the structure and function of genes and proteins.

Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine (UCMM)

UCMM is an interdisciplinary research centre

The KBC Environment today includes all departments located within the KBC building and affiliated departments at other locations on campus. It also includes research centres, research units, and centres of excellence at Umeå University (UmU) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). Three faculties and two universities are represented in KBC. From the Faculty of Science and Technology, UmU, the participating departments are the departments of Chemistry, Physics, Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Plant Physiology, and Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory (TEC-Lab), a part of the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics. From the Faculty of Medicine - the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics and Umeå Centre for Molecular Medicine (UCMM). The Department of Molecular Biology is affiliated with both the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Medicine. The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology, the Department of Forest Biomaterials and Technology and the Department of Forest Ecology and Management are representing the Faculty of Forest Sciences, SLU. The Department of Forest Genetics (SLU) and the Department of Plant Physiology (UmU) form the Umeå Plant Science Center (UPSC).

In addition to representatives from all the participating departments, the KBC board now includes representatives from Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR), Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), IceLab, and representatives from the Department of Integrative Medical Biology (IMB).
