Master's Programme in Business Development and Internationalisation

You have been admitted to the Master's Programme in Business Development and Internationalisation at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, Umeå University. My name is Martina Sundqvist and I am the Programme Advisor. On this page you will find important information, please read it carefully. How to start

  • 1. Your offer

    You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

    If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

    If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

    Support for students with disabilities

    If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Register on the programme

    Registration takes place at campus when the semester starts in the end of August 2021.

    The start of the autumn semester with lectures

    The autumn semester starts with lectures on the 30th of August.

    The schedule for the first module, "Perspectives on Strategy, 7.5 credits", will be published no later than the 9th of August at the website mentioned above.

    Recommended arrival time

    You are recommended to arrive at least one week before lectures start so that you can participate in all the introductory activities.

    There will be a special Welcome meeting for all Master's Program Students at USBE (=Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics)on Friday the 27th of August. You have two sessions to choose between, both in Lindelhallen 2. Choose which session to attend here

    The International Office at Umeå University will arrange an online Orientation Course for international students starting 25th of August.
    It is recommended that all international students attend it.

    Late arrival

    You are recommended to arrive one week early before the start of lectures but at the very last you may arrive one week late, 

    before 4.30 p.m. Monday the 6th of September.

    If you arrive later you will no longer have a seat at the program and will have to return home. If you fear that you will face some delay keep in touch with me, your Program Advisor.


    If you can participate in the Welcome meeting for all Master's Program Students at USBE on Friday the 27th of August you will be registered there.
    If you arrive earlier or if you arrive after the 27th of August you can book a meeting with me, your Program Advisor to register.

    We have gathered all information that you will need during your time here at USBE on our student website.

    At the Student web of USBE  you will find information about schedules, exams, internships, thesis, studies abroad, degrees and career.
    (Click on the MENU at the top right-hand corner of the webpage to access the different information).

    We have started a Facebook group for all newly admitted students to this program. An e-mail with a link to the group has been sent out. If you have not received it and wish to join the group contact me. (The e-mail can also have ended up in your junk mail).

    You are welcome to contact me with any questions you might have but during my vacation, between the 6th of July until the 12th of August, I will only answer my e-mail sporadically.  I do however have an automatic reply with a lot of information.

  • Information about the course for the first semester

    During the first semester of the programme you will study a 30 credit course called "Strategic Business Development D, 30 credits".

    The course syllabus with the expected learning outcomes and literature list is one and the same for the whole course (= the 1st semester). You will study the course from the 30th of August until the 16th of January 2022.

    The course "Strategic Business Development D, 30 credits" consists of four different modules that you study for five weeks each in sequence one after the other.

    The first module is called "Perspectives on Strategy, 7.5 credits" (That is also the name of the first schedule).

  • Information about the first module

    You will find the schedule for the first module in the programme, "Perspectives on Strategy, 7.5 credits", published no later than the 9th of August here.

    Each module has a separate schedule that will be published one month before the start of the specific module.

    We use an educational platform for these modules called Canvas.

    In Canvas you will find all the information you need for this module such as the  instructions for assignments, list of module participants and messages from the teacher.

    I will also have a Canvas page for the whole program where I will post important information to you as a student at the program.

    Remember that in order to start the first course and first module of that course you must first be registered. This will be done when you arrive.


New at Umeå University

  • Information due to COVID-19

    From 2 November, most of the previous COVID measures are lifted – welcome back to campus! However, things will not go back to normal straight away. For instance, some parts of your education may still take place online.

    Since the return to campus is planned by those responsible for your education, you will receive more detailed information regarding your studies from your department.

  • Recommended arrival times

    International students are recommended to arrive at least a few days before the start of the regular term, preferably prior to the Orientation. If you fail to arrive on time, you have to contact the study counselor as soon as possible, but not later than one week ahead of the course start, or you may not be able to register for the programme.

    If you will have housing through the International Housing Office you will receive information about your arrival in your offer of housing.

    Don't forget - Umeå has cold winters, so pack accordingly with a warm jacket, warm shoes, gloves and hat.

  • Orientation

    Moving to a new country with an unfamiliar language, culture and customs can be a challenge. We would like to help you and ease that challenge so that you can focus on your studies. Therefore, we would like to offer you the possibility to take part in our Orientation, which begins a few days before the start of the term (Autumn) or the same day as the term starts (Spring).

  • Activate your user account

    As a new student, you need to activate your user account approximately two weeks prior to the term start in order to, for instance:

    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • register for courses
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

    If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the term start.

    For exchange students
    If you are an exchange student, you will receive information on arrival about how to activate your account.

    Help! It's not working
    If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • Get your UmU card

    When you are on Campus Umeå, Umeå Arts Campus or Campus Örnsköldsvik, you will need a UmU card. The card has the following functions:

    • building access
    • borrowing card for the University Library system
    • copying and printing card.

    To get the card, you need to apply for it. Here’s how to apply for the UmU card.

  • Join a student union

    There are three student unions at Umeå University:

    • Umeå Student Union
    • Umeå Student Union of Science and Technology
    • Umeå Medical Sciences Student Union.

    They are actively involved so that fellow students have a high quality of education, good working environment, and fun leisure time.

  • The website for current students

    The website for current students has all sorts of information about services, support, legal and practical matters at Umeå University. You can sign in to the learning platforms, see your schedule and course overview, register for a course, get a study certificate, apply for a degree or sign up for an examination.
