WELCOME TO

Master's Programme in Environmental Archaeology

Welcome to Archaeology at Umeå University! As program coordinator for the master program in Environmental Archaeology I look forward to meeting you in Umeå. My name is Johan Linderholm and I am an associate professor in Environmental Archaeology here at Umeå.  Below you will find information about the first semester of the programme, registration and some useful information about whom to turn to if you have any questions. Hope to see you this autumn!

How to start

  • 1. Your offer

You have been admitted. If you want to keep your place (seat), you do not have to reply to your offer.

If you do not want to keep your place you should decline your offer by logging in to 'My pages' on universityadmissions.se, and follow the instructions. You should click "I wish to decline this offer" next to the course or programme you want to decline.

If you see "Reserve" next to your course or programme in the Notification of selection results, this means that you've been placed on a waiting list for that course/programme.

    Support for students with disabilities

If you are in need of special support due to disability, you should apply for that in good time before you start your studies. Find more information about support for studying with disabilities.

  • 2. Activate your user account and MFA

As a new student, you need to activate your user account (your Umu-id) approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

With your user account you can:

    • register for courses
    • access the internet in computer labs and the university's wireless network
    • submit assignments and verify your study results
    • access your student e-mail

If you are a new student, you will automatically receive a user account when you are admitted, but you will need to activate it for it to function properly. You will not be able to activate it until approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Install MFA for a more secure login
To increase security and reduce the risk of unauthorised access to your information or account, students must enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to log in to various systems, such as Canvas and the Student Web.

I want to activate my user account and install MFA

Exchange student or tuition fee paying student

If you are an exchange student or tuition fee paying student, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your account.

    Help! It´s not working

If you are having problems activating your account or logging in, please contact our Servicedesk. You will find answers to common questions, and can submit enquiries.

  • 3. Programme registration

    Online registration

To begin your studies on the programme, you need to register for the first course, Environmental archaeology, field and laboratory methodology. You do this by logging in via Ladok for students using your Umu-id.

To be able to sign in to Ladok and register online, you need to have activated your Umu-id user account (see heading "New at Umeå University" below for more information).

Online registration opens one week before the first course starts and closes when the course begins (see information under "Programme start"). It is important that you register during that time period, otherwise you risk losing your place (seat) in the programme.

You will normally gain access to the online learning platform, Canvas, within one day after you have registered for the first course.

If you choose not to start the programme, there is no need to contact us. Instead, please ensure you decline your offer by logging in to your account at Universityadmissions.se. In doing so, you free up your place to someone who is on the waiting list.

  • 4. Programme start

    1 september

    Time: See schedule

    Location: See schedule

Schedule is for the first course on the programme.

About the programme

  • Programme information

The first semester of the master’s programme in Environmental Archaelogy consists of 30 credits of course work (for a full overview of the programme, see the syllabus: https://www.umu.se/en/education/master/masters-programme-in-environmental-archaeology/

We will start off the programme on the 1st September with an introduction to the programme meeting, followed by introductory lectures. You will also get the opportunity to meet some of the teachers and other students who might be taking advance courses but not as part of the master’s programme. Please let us know if you are not able to attend the first week.

Important information is that the first week will be on campus, but the following three weeks will be field oriented, and we will stay overnight at times somewhere in the Norrlandic wilderness. Field adapted clothing is commended, especially wet sustainable warm footwear.

During the first year of the programme, you will obtain a solid foundation in environmental archaeological field and lab methods, followed by more detailed theory and methods. To effectively map excavation sites, you will also learn Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for archaeology and environmental archaeology. The first year ends with an independent thesis (15ECTS), which allows you to apply for the degree of Magister.
