MIMS Clinical Research Fellows

In order to strengthen the clinical research and more closely incorporate preclinical and clinical research locally and nationally, MIMS decided in 2009 to initiate a program for Clinical Fellows. MIMS awards Clinical Research Fellowships to clinicians with a recent PhD and a strong research background.

The award comes with up to 12-month research time for the fellow and two years of a postdoctoral researcher to work in collaboration with a MIMS PI, or a PI at another Nordic Partnership node or EMBL. This meaningful link between clinical projects and basic research conducted at MIMS or its partners has proven to be successful for covering all translational aspects from bench to bedside. Every medical faculty in Sweden has been represented in the MIMS Clinical Research Fellowship Programme.

Research description

Anne-Marie Fors Connolly

My research is focused on studying life-threatening and debilitating acute and long-term complications following viral infections, and how to identify individuals at risk of complications or severe disease before they become infected. This research combines the high-quality total population registry for all of Sweden with the unique cohort of individuals in Northern Sweden that have given blood samples since many years back for research purposes. The viruses that are included in my projects are SARS-CoV-2, Influenza and Puumala viruses; and all of these viruses are notifiable diseases. This means that every individual in Sweden that has a laboratory-verified positive test is reported to a central communicable surveillance database, and this data can then be extracted and cross-linked with several nationwide registries covering information from socioeconomic variables to comorbidities to need of intensive care to even those that need to be on sick leave for a longer period of time.

We study emerging viral infections, with a focus on Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus (TBEV), which infects the central nervous system. We study how the virus cause disease in humans through combining immunological analyses on patient samples with epidemiological studies. We also perform basic experimental virology research to help explain disease pathogenesis. Overall, our research has a translational and clinical base within the area of infectious diseases.
